Navarone is a rock band formed in Nairobi, Kenya. Navarone was one of the seminal bands active in the kenya-punk scene in the mid to late 2000s, performing to a devout following across Nairobi. The band features Ross Patel (currently performs in bands around Nairobi) on guitar and vocals, Sid Subramanian (currently an electronic musician based in New Delhi, India) on guitar and vocals, Kinlay Denning (a musician based in Melbourne, Australia) on drums and Danny Little (wherebouts unknown) on bass. Neon Red was written and recorded (but never released till now) before each and any member reached 18.
Gigs played a crucial role in the forging the bands identity, sound and sense of community. Over the course of the decade, the bands involved in the kenya rock scene established a DIY ethic to gigs and releases as well as technical and promotional support for kenyan bands. This community of musicians became known as Kenya-Punk.
Neon Red is the third release of Navarone. It was also almost destined to never happen. At this stage the band’s core had been seasoned by hard drinking, numerous line up changes, partying, infighting, lost recordings - a path hollowed out by cheap alcohol and cigarettes. As a reflection of these experiences, Neon Red became the most noticeably dark and heavy recording of all Navarone releases. Therein lay Neon Red’s appeal as something dangerous, fleeting and unique, a rock record from Nairobi that nearly didn’t get to see the light of day.
11 years too late Neon Red finally gets a release.
Recorded in Nairobi, KE during the later part of 2006 at Andrew Crawford Productions and Homeboyz.
Remixed and Mastered at The Palace (Melbourne, AUS) in 2017 by Errol Green.
The Long Island metal band's third album etches arena-sized hooks into their jagged compositions, deftly balancing experimental and poppy inclinations. Bandcamp Album of the Day May 12, 2022
